A Textbook Wave Cloud

I caught this textbook example of an Altocumulus Standing Lenticular Cloud or Wave Cloud hovering just east of the northern tip of the Medicine Bow Mountain Range near Laramie, Wyoming. Most people don't get excited or even care about wave clouds, but hang gliders pilots do. In fact we get down right excited! Wave clouds form in the crest of mountain waves when the temperature drops below the dew point. In the picture below you can see the initial wave cloud above the mountain with two smaller secondary wave clouds in the next crest.

I have some other shots of wave clouds that I'll post soon, in the mean time you can read more about Altocumulus Standing Lenticulars Here.

Awesome pic's, Alex. Thanks for your perspective! There are some incredible shots of Mt Rainier lenticulars in series from early December you can search on the web - like this one: http://blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/gardenphotography/archives/156884.asp
